Finally I had time to catch up on my blog. I went to the library after work and then when they closed I went to a grocery store in town with free WiFi. I am planning on getting my own internet hooked up within the next month, but until then I am grateful for the free service all over town. The restaurant where I work has WiFi but I don't ever feel like going back there when I am off work.
Bought a slice of pizza for dinner and parked myself at a table for over 2 hours. There are a lot of other laptops here, so all the wall plugs are full at the moment. I am going home and giving my plug to somebody else. The person that does the baking in the deli must be Scandinvian, they have kaffebrod, prinsessbakelser och wienerbrod. I ate a prinsess bakelse for dessert. Yum!

Dream of my own house
(Wednesday, June 25, 2008)
Today I found out my friends put up their house for sale. I have always loved their property and cute little house and I thought I should at least find out if I could even qualify for a loan if I tried, so I went to the bank to fill out an application. I am 98% sure I won't get a loan, at least not to buy that house, it is a little too expensive for me if I am going to focus on school. It was still fun to dream a little and to see what my options are. I don't want to pay rent forever and I would love a piece of land out East End road. I won't hear anything until next week, but it was an exciting day no matter what happens.

Fun in the sun
(Monday, June 23, 2008)
Worked at the restaurant in the morning but they called from the photo shop and said I could stay home if I wanted to because they were so slow, so I did. Sat out in the sun for awhile and then I went to the beach with Troy. There were so many people down there practising kite surfing. Wow, it is really taking off in Homer.
I got tired of not having any TV, since I lost all my channels a few days ago, so I invested in "rabbit ears" so I can watch a few channels. Was able to hook it up and watched some TV tonight.
My muscles are a little sore from the soccer game and my black eye is not bad at all.
I am still unpacking stuff and spent a couple hours filing and tossing paper. Feels good to get organized.
Very tragic news
(Sunday, June 22, 2008)
Tonight I found out that a Fisherman I knew from Yakutat drowned today. Tony Jr. was my age and left behind a young daughter. I am so sad for his whole family. They lost another son a few years ago and have been through so much. His father and grandmother were always my favorite customers and I wish I could fly over there and go to the funeral, but I don't think I can.
Earlier in the day I joined an all women's soccer "league". We have a coach that is from London and used to play semiprofessional soccer, this will be the first soccer coach I have ever had. I always played during recess in school and after school when I was younger but it was a long time ago. Luckily none of us are really great so it's mostly for exercise and fun. I got hit in the eye by the ball and ended up with a black eye that I will proudly show off! Twenty women showed up and our team won 2-1. I think I am a defender. I played mid and then defender, but I got a lot of compliments on keeping the ball away from our goal. That is the position I most often played when I was a kid so I felt more comfortable and there is a little less running...
They meet twice per week but I work on Thursdays when they have practise, so I can only play on Sunday afternoons. The coach said if we could get good enough by next year, he wants to put a group together and go over to England and play against other women, but we would need a whole lot of practise to do that... but it sure would be fun!
My former boss Mark Sr. had to have a stint put in because he had 70% blockage in his artery. Now he is back in Yakutat, recuperating. Hope he will be OK. Don't want to hear any more bad news.

Longest day
(Saturday, June 21, 2008)
Sad to say that after today we will be loosing daylight hours. Winter will be here before I know it and I wont even have a tan this year.
Work at the restaurant was very busy and came home with $23 in tips. Tonight I went to visit my friends Mei and Josh and we watched a comedy, it was OK, cute.
I guess I missed a pretty exciting game between Turkey and Croatia, but Turkey won on free kicks.

Solstice
(Friday, June 20, 2008)
Glad Midsommar! Happy Solstice!
E-mailed my paper after a lot of failed attempts. That is the main reason I hate distance classes.
Earlier this week my friends from Anchorage came down to Homer for a few days of fishing and camping and they brought the shelves I had bought when I was up there and left in their garage. Tonight I spend a couple hours putting them together and unpacking some books. I feel like such and adult. I now have tools, had to buy a hammer and a screwdriver and I feel like a real grown-up now! The shelves fit perfectly in my living room. Am so excited!!!
Government money!
(Wednesday, June 18, 2008)
I don't check my mail very often, but I got a happy surprise today. A check from the government to spend on whatever I want. Too bad I will spend it on something as boring as credit card debt. Want to pay it down before school starts in August.
Today I opened the photo store all by myself for the first time and it went really well. I was nervous but I did it!
Sweden is no longer in the soccer championship, got beat by the Russians! Don't know who to cheer for now, Germany will probably win no matter what.
Started writing on my paper, but didn't finish it tonight like I had hoped. I guess I'll be up late tomorrow night finishing at the last minute!

No more soccer...
(Tuesday, June 17, 2008)
Found out that my old boss in Yakutat had some health issues and had to go to the clinic for some tests. He thought he was having a heart attack, but now they are waiting for the test results. I am so worried about him, I am very close to him and his whole family. I hope he will be ok.
Lost my sport channel, I am really bummed out about that. Mom is calling with with the soccer updates, but it's just not the same.
No news Monday
(Monday, June 16, 2008)
Worked both jobs today. Talked with my boss at the photo store, because I was offered a job in a print shop and wanted to know if they had any plans on letting me go since things have been a little slow. I didn't want to turn down this job and then end up getting laid off in a couple of weeks, but she reassured me that they wanted to keep me so I'll stay there.
Watched a boring game between Turkey and Germany, not even worth my time...

Soccer and study!
(Sunday, June 15, 2008)
Spent most of the day on the couch watching two soccer games and reading for my paper. At least it's very interesting reading, but when I try to start writing I get writer's block. I know when I am about to run out of time, the words will come to me, they always do, but I wish I could write without pressure...
Two months
(Saturday, June 14th, 2008)
It is now two months since I left Yakutat. Somehow it seems like a lifetime ago. I miss everybody in town so much, but I am doing really well here in Homer. Today I went to my co-worker Amanda's son's Birthday party at a pizza place in town. Yummy. He turned eight and he has a little crush on me. He took a shower, wanted to get his hair done, wear nice clothes and borrowed his dad's cologne when he heard I was coming!!! So cute!!!
I started studying for my paper that is due on June 20th and replanted my tomato plants. Found a small little green tomato, and lots of flowers that will hopefully turn into more tomatoes. Watched some more soccer on tv, Sweden-Spain, they beat us in the last minute 2-1... bummer!

5 day summery
Friday the 13th. Thirteen is my favorite number since I was born on the 13th, so no big deal for me. Had a pretty busy week, just working at my two jobs. Watched as much soccer as I can when I am off, since there is a Championship going on in Europe right now and I can can usually watch the early game in the morning before work. I was so excited to discover I have the channel that is showing the matches.!!!! Wish I could record the later game, but I can't get my VCR to work. Tomorrow morning Sweden is playing and I am off work!!!! Perfect!
Home sweet home
(Sunday, June 8, 2008)
Glad to be back home again, even though I had a lot of fun in ANC. I made a new friend too. The friends I was staying with, left to go to Homer the night I drove up, but they let me and their other friend from Homer and her two children stay in their house while they were gone. We stayed up chatting late every night and I really liked her. She is with Y W A M in Homer and I am hoping to connect with the base there since I miss my years with them in Maui.
Was able to find some bookshelves on sale and left the boxes in my friend's garage till next time they come down or I come up with a vehicle. Wish I could have brought them home this time but I can be patient. It is nice to be home with my dog again. I am pretty sure he hardly missed me at all, playing with his little friend outside everyday.

School is out
(Saturday, June 7, 2008)
Sad to say the class ended tonight. I learned so much during these two days and am so excited to be back in school. I was also inspired by all the graduate students that were taking this class too. I would love to go on and do the Masters program, but I should just focus on this BA for now...
If I could get into research at a big university I would be so stoked. That would be so much fun.
Went to the movies after the class. Tomorrow I am flying home but will have most of the day to drive around and buy a few more things I need.

Back in school
(Friday,
June 6, 2008)
What a fun day. It was an amazing class. Even though I hadn't gotten the information about what books to buy and read before class I wasn't behind. Ran over to the campus bookstore on our lunch break to get the material.
I was almost late this morning because the did a building switch on us, last minute and I had to get some help to find the new building... that's what I get for trying to be prepared, huh!
The campus is wonderful. Had no idea I would like it so much. Maybe it would feel different if the hallways were packed with students but now during the summer it was such a peaceful and calm place.
If I have to move up here for my last semester of schooling I won't mind at all, but for now I'll stick to Homer for awhile. The teacher was very good too and I wish it was a full semester class, not just a two day class.
Did some shopping tonight, just basic stuff, because I won't be returning the rental to Homer, I'll fly home instead. The rental car owner will pay for most of my airline ticket since he had to back out of our little deal. Very nice of him, and I can still use the vehicle while I am here. So the only real disappointment is that I can't load up bookshelves and groceries like I had hoped.

On the road...
(Thursday, June 5, 2008)
Worked this morning and then I arranged to pick-up the cute little VW Beetle to drive to Anchorage. The drive went well and I only spent $36 in gas!!! Swapped the cars at the airport and now I am driving my free (!) rental. Spending three nights at my friends house while taking my college class. I drove over to the campus late tonight to check out what building I need to go to tomorrow so I wouldn't be late trying to find it in the morning. Now I can sleep in peace. The campus is only about 10 min away.

Even luckier today!!!
(Wednesday, June 4, 2008)
This is just too good to be true! Today at work, my co-workers sister, who knew I was trying to get a ride, called and said there was an ad in the paper about bringing a vehicle to Anchorage...
I called right away, and sealed the deal. It turned out to be a woman I worked with at the newspaper years ago. Now I have a ride both ways, and all I am paying for is gas. I am dropping one vehicle off at the airport and picking another one up! How awesome is that??? Somebody is really looking out for me!
Did my 12 hour workday and it was exhausting for sure. The restaurant was super busy tonight for several hours straight. That is a good sign the tourists are in town, I guess...

Lucky me...
(Tuesday, June 3, 2008)
I can hardly believe what happened to me today. I called to find a cheap rental car for my trip up to Anchorage this weekend. I really don't want to drive my old "gas-hog" if I don't have to, so I thought I should check around a little. Well, guess what, I was offered a free rental car, just pick it up from the airport and bring it back to Homer... Now I just have to find a ride up to Anchorage or buy a one-way ticket and fly. It will still be cheaper than driving. I am sooooo stoked!!!

Payday!!
(Monday, June 2, 2008)
A double payday for me. It has been a long time since I had a paycheck, over 1 1/2 month, I think. I like paychecks, even thought they were both pretty small this time, but that will get better from now on.
Worked at the restaurant in the morning and photo store in the afternoon. It was a long day, but just a warm-up of 10 hours, with a 45 min break in the middle. On Wednesday and Thursday I have 12 hour work days with only a 25 min break in the middle. I think that might be really tough...

Chillin'
(Sunday, June 1, 2008)
Took it real easy today. Went to church this morning and saw some old friends and got to practise a little sign language too. I have forgotten a lot but as I was trying to sign, it was coming back to me. I wish I was off work on Thursday afternoons so I could go to the deaf social they have every week and practise.
Sorted some of my books and watched TV. I really didn't want to go outside much, very windy. It was a good relaxing day...
