Very tragic news

(Sunday, June 22, 2008)
Tonight I found out that a Fisherman I knew from Yakutat drowned today. Tony Jr. was my age and left behind a young daughter. I am so sad for his whole family. They lost another son a few years ago and have been through so much. His father and grandmother were always my favorite customers and I wish I could fly over there and go to the funeral, but I don't think I can.

Earlier in the day I joined an all women's soccer "league". We have a coach that is from London and used to play semiprofessional soccer, this will be the first soccer coach I have ever had. I always played during recess in school and after school when I was younger but it was a long time ago. Luckily none of us are really great so it's mostly for exercise and fun. I got hit in the eye by the ball and ended up with a black eye that I will proudly show off! Twenty women showed up and our team won 2-1. I think I am a defender. I played mid and then defender, but I got a lot of compliments on keeping the ball away from our goal. That is the position I most often played when I was a kid so I felt more comfortable and there is a little less running...
They meet twice per week but I work on Thursdays when they have practise, so I can only play on Sunday afternoons. The coach said if we could get good enough by next year, he wants to put a group together and go over to England and play against other women, but we would need a whole lot of practise to do that... but it sure would be fun!
My former boss Mark Sr. had to have a stint put in because he had 70% blockage in his artery. Now he is back in Yakutat, recuperating. Hope he will be OK. Don't want to hear any more bad news.
