At the print shop today, we had a worker who is a missionary in Uganda. I met him a while back when he and his family came in to take passport pictures at my other job, and it was great to get to know him a little better, and hear him talk about his life over there. I love hearing and experiencing other cultures. I hope I get to go again one day...
Met with my math tutor and seem to have found a kind of flow, making math a little easier. Started looking at classes for next semester, looks like I'll have a full schedule.
Got a nice complement from my boss today, as we discussed moving and finding work. She said, "Jessica can do anything" and it felt so good to hear, after all the years of negative remarks. Of course it's not true, I am a lousy cook and housekeeper, I know I wouldn't be a good chemistry teacher and I can't do much on computers etc....

Fantastic day!
(Sunday, September 28, 2008)
The sun was shining the whole day. After church I drove out on the Spit to try to find a piece of beach for Troy to play on. The tide was so high it wasn't easy, but I found a piece behind the hockey rink. He swam after sticks for a really long time, the water must have been cold but he didn't seem like he noticed at all. It is such a fantastic feeling to watch him have fun. Can't help but smile when he is so excited. It wore him out pretty good and he went home and slept a lot.
Played soccer tonight and mostly played defense like I always do, but the last 10 min I was forward, and I SCORED! It was such a rush!! I understand why people want to be forwards now!Later this week we'll do our end-of-the-season party, I'll miss playing outdoors...
Felt a little sore tonight from hockey yesterday, think I must have tensed up when I threw myself on the ice, but it's a kind of "good" sore.
The stars were amazing again tonight, clear sky and very bright. Talked with Yakutat friends on the phone earlier today and the combination of that and the stars, made me feel homesick for Yak. again...
First ice-hockey attempt
Beluga Lake in the sunset
(Saturday, September 27, 2008)
Oh my! Tried playing ice-hockey tonight for the very first time. Borrowed gear that I was missing and it was bring-a-friend night at the rink. When I first stepped out on the ice I almost panicked. It was a lot harder than I remember, but the more I practised the better it felt. We got to do a bunch of drills including throwing ourselves on the ice to know what it feels like to fall. It felt very unnatural to skate as fast as you can and then dive, but of course it didn't hurt at all because of all the gear and padding. I had a blast!! The ladies were great, all though I can tell they are a little tougher than my teammates from soccer. I think I will try to join the team if I can keep up...
Worked almost 9 hours today, so it was fun to play afterwards.
Staples
(Friday, September 26, 2008)
Worked a lot again today, almost 8 hours at the photo shop and 3,5h at the print shop. I was trained to do a new job on the line today, stapling, fun, once I got a hang of the rhythm. Since I want to stop working at the photo shop they finally put up a Help Wanted sign, so hopefully they'll find someone soon. That will give me some more time to study.
Tonight was beautiful, the sky was clear and full of stars. Reminded me so much of my Yakutat late night walks. Really missed it tonight.
(harvested another yummy tomato)
Working all day...
(Thursday, September 25, 2008)
Worked almost 12 hours today, restaurant in the morning and print shop in afternoon/night. When I was checking the ballots today, I found thousands that were too light in color so they have to reprint about 3,500. Bummer. Worked quality control all night. Hope I get to do the "line" for a little bit tomorrow. Flipping through thousands of ballots can get old after a few hours...
My favorite tv show started up again, a hospital, evening soap opera... The first seasons are usually the very best, so we'll see if I still like it.

Not to shabby after all

Got my test result back, and I scored 80% which is still a B, believe it or not. I was sure I was getting a C on that test. Never thought I would be so happy about a B... I am shooting for an A on the next tests.
Tonight I took a break in my studies and worked at the print shop for almost 6 hours. Love it! We printed numbers on 102,000 ballots in 7,5 hours today. The total amount we are printing are 750,000 so we might be done in about 6-7 days if everything runs smoothly.
Still squeaked in about 45 minutes of studying before going to bed, to not get behind in Anthropology.

My math test didn't go so well, will get the results tomorrow...
I didn't get the house I wanted to rent. They found someone in a wheelchair, that needed it more, the house had a ramp leading up to the door, so I can't be too upset about it. I am still pretty disappointed though... My own house, rent was cheap, it was too good to be true, I guess. Someday, maybe, I will get my own little house, I hope...

Sunday
(Sunday, September 21, 2008)
Picked up a friend who doesn't have a car and played soccer. Did pretty good today, I like being a defender. Tonight I went to a question and answer session about a new church starting up in November. Know one of the pastors a little bit from before. They are both in their 30s and I am really excited to become apart of it when it starts.

(Saturday, September 20, 2008)
My plans were to get up really early, but it felt so good to stay in bed, so I didn't get up until 8:50 am, and got to work an hour later. During my lunch break I drove out to the ice rink on the Spit, and scored some free hockey gear. I got skates, socks, shorts, shirt, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and I will only have to get a stick, gloves and shoulder pads. It was left over after the gear swap, and I felt like a kid on Christmas morning (or Christmas Eve, in Sweden).
I hope it works out that I will be able to play this winter.
Memorial service
(Friday, September 19, 2008)
Worked at the restaurant yesterday morning and got a lot of tips even though it was pretty slow, because we didn't have a dishwasher this morning so I didn't have to share with anyone. Met with my math tutor for 30 minutes and then I drove 15 min. to the Memorial Service for my friend who was killed in a murder/suicide drama. It was nice to hear people tell stories about his life, but so sad to watch his mother talk about him. No mother should have to lose a child...
Last night I decided to play soccer, to celebrate life. There was only 9 of us, and the field was soaking wet, and then it started to rain, but it was still super fun... A girl on my soccer team is trying to convince me to try hockey this winter, and I am very tempted, but am not sure about my skating skills. It has been so many years since I figure-skated, and I know it will be really different to use hockey skates. Not sure if I can afford it either...
Today I got to the college early and met with Joe and my math tutor. Ended up studying math for 3,5 hours and I am starting to get it, I think. Work at the photo shop was slow, so I was able to stay a little longer than I had planned. A friend stopped by and wanted me to come over and hang out tonight, but I had to turn down the offer because I have too much to do right now. Bummer! I also saw an old co-worker from my hospital day, haven't seen her since 2-3 years back. I am so glad to be back in Homer!

Generous friends

Received another package in the mail today from a friend, with chocolate and a photo album with pictures of her and her family (love them all!). Made me miss them like crazy.
Had a math tutor today, and I was really getting it earlier today, but when I tried again on my own tonight, I kept getting stuck! Very frustrating...

No BRCA1 or 2!!!!
(Tuesday, September 16, 2008)
Great news today. Found out test results that the breast cancer in our family doesn't come from the mutated gene called BRCA 1 or 2! I am super excited to hear that...what a relief.
Got back an anthropology homework and got an A but only a B on my art history. I had the hardest time finding inspiration for that homework assignment, but I'll have to try a little harder. I really won't be satisfied if I don't get an A at the end of the semester in that class. It should be one of the easier classes I am taking.
Got an exciting package in the mail from Hawaii. Thanks Jen, love you!!!

Studied like mad again today. Mondays always seem worse than any of the other days.
Started working with a math tutor together with another student. My ally from anthropology is now my ally for math too. Since I took a three year break, I seem to have forgotten so much, I hope I can catch-up soon.

Still looking for a new home...
(Sunday, September 14, 2008)
Spend the first half of the day at my friend's house and did a couple more loads of laundry. I am all caught up now. Later in the day, I drove to check out a 3 bdrm trailer for rent, but even though the price is somewhat right, the windows were so thin, it looked like it would get expensive to keep it heated throughout the winter. Also it was very isolated. It would be great for Troy to be able to run around, but I don't know if I would feel very safe with no neighbors around. Tonight I went to the movies with a friend, a total chick-flick, and then I gave her a little ride in my truck. She had wanted to ride in my "monster-truck" for a while and it was fun to cruise around a little.
Skipped soccer because the grass must be soaking wet, and I didn't want to slip and get hurt.

Anniversary
Last night I had nightmares about being hunted, chased. It was exhausting.
In real life I was found, and got these flowers delivered to my workplace... Have been legally married for 11 year today, but separated for 8 months, so I didn't really want them, even though they are beautiful.
Looked at a cabin that was for rent, but it was so small I would have to get rid of most of my furniture that I just got, and I don't know if I want to do that. Also the floor was very new and he was a little worried it would get scratched by my dog, so I would have to get lots of rugs... I'll think about it, and keep looking. One of the neighbors is an old acquaintance, and he told me has been sober for 6 months, I was so proud of him for changing his life like that. It takes a lot, but he looked so healthy!
Tonight I am dog sitting for my friends while they are in Anchorage. They live in a huge house and I am catching up on laundry. Did three loads already.
Free money from AK!
(Friday, September 12, 2008)
What a wonderful gift! I got $3,269 deposited into my bank account from the Dividend Fund and the State of AK. I am so glad I didn't decide to leave Alaska this year. Maybe now I can give my notice at one of my jobs so I can have a little more time for school and homework!

7 years since...
(Thursday, September 11, 2008)
I can't believe it's already been 7 years since the 9/11 attacks. That was my first year in Alaska and I remember very clearly what was going on in my life at that time. It is crazy how fast time goes. I hope the next 7 years slows down a little.
Worked at the restaurant, but they didn't need me at the print shop so I was able to play soccer tonight. It was great fun, but my right foot got stepped on twice, really hard, in the same spot, so I am hurting pretty bad. Of course it was still totally worth it!
Happy Birthday, Chris!

Sickness and Friends...
(Wednesday, September 10, 2008)
After my morning class, I got sick and had to go to bed 1 1/2 hours. I had planned to study math during that time, but I just had to lay down for a little. Felt better later on and went back to school. For lunch I went out with a friend from school and it was so great to sit and talk, had a lot of catching up to do. Wish I had the money to do that more often. Hopefully we can do it sometime soon again. In the evening I worked about 3 hours and later I went to a friend's house and watched a really good movie, oldy but goody (S.o.p.h.i.e.s C.h.o.i.c.e) and I cried like a baby. Got home really late, but I had a pretty great day, despite getting sick that morning.

Studied really, really hard yesterday and today. I hope it will pay off. Today, I found an ally in my anthropology class. Someone, who like me struggle to believe all the theories being taught as facts and absolute truth... It feels nice to not be alone, dealing with all that. Might have found a math tutor that can help me out, starting next week... Worked only 3 hours at the print shop.
